Peas and Carrots

"Peas and Carrots" is a commissioned painting that I finished today.  It is a 9" x 12" pastel painting on UArt paper.  This was a fun piece to paint despite it's complexity.    All the print made for a challenge of course, but the plastic bags had many folds and wrinkles with the accompanying highlights and shadows.  This is also the first piece where I put the light source directly overhead.  The client wanted the viewer to be able to clearly read the print on the bags indicating they were peas and carrots.  I was concerned that my usual left side lighting would not allow for that to happen.  Being unaccustomed to the overhead lighting, I found myself having to be very observant about how the shadows fell around the scattered vegetables.  This piece was commissioned to be a gift for a friend of my client.   Apparently, the friend always says that  they get along like peas and carrots go together....thus the painting!  It was a special treat to paint this knowing that fact!
