This 30" x 40" oil painting on aluminum composite panel took me a long time to paint. There were certainly issues such as out-of-town company that ate into my painting time....but primarily it was the detail of the painting setup itself. At this point I have doubts that golf balls will end up in future paintings (although never say never) due to the complexity of painting them. A golf ball is a series of hexagons all catching the light from different angles creating shadows and highlights on each hexagon! Awgh! I certainly never thought about that fact as I set up and photographed my composition. Then there are bocce balls with their indentations...again catching the light and creating shadows and highlights. Not to mention the baseball I found on one of my desert walks. Being well used gives it character...but also provides complexity with the signage and lighting on the individual lacings. And then there are tennis balls. I had to do a lot of experimentation to figure out how to create the fuzzy surface. I don't mind spending a lot of time on a painting....and obviously I love painting detail.....but I think I am primed for a slightly less complicated concept for my next painting. This particular concept developed as a result of the fun I have painting marbles and more recently pool balls. I collected every kind of ball of a reasonable size (as opposed to basketballs or soccer balls) I could think of and placed them in a large flat box lid. My thinking from the beginning was to have the baseball as my main interest point and I placed the other balls somewhat randomly but with variety of color and shape in mind as well. This is another setup that was lit from above as opposed to being lit from the side as it was the texture of the balls that was my primary interest. The balls are all now stored safely away in my still life storage closet and I am ready for the next challenge!
